Reflection through STEM

I have discovered again why I love science and math.  There are so many awesome things you can do with them.  I have a new appreciation of Engineering and Technology.  I love seeing the new robots and technology that are available to students.  I love seeing the students figuring things out then making their project better.  Try and fail is the best type of learning.  This semester has been so much fun exploring, learning, and planning the STEM fair for the three schools.  Thank you to our teacher this would not have ran so smoothly because she did a lot of prep and gathering of materials.  Learning different ways to teach my future students to push their comfort thinking so will grow in their thinking.  Including the Launch, explore, summarize and the 5 E's lessons and thinking outside the box.  I am excited to try them out this next semester.

Math Trails

Math trails are flexible because there is no right way to do a math trail.  I love the idea in which students observe math concepts they are studying in their environment and then create a problem for their classmates to solve.  I love the observation in the students environment.  This helps show students math is everywhere.  We need to look and be aware of math in our environment.

I like that we can use our surroundings to teach math to our students.  I would use a patio to help teach area and perimeter.  Another was is to find a pool or tiles on the floor or even bricks in a wall.  The students will estimate the perimeter and the area.  Then I would have then create a yard on graph paper and have their classmates solve the perimeter and area of each object.  Math trails can take a day, to a few days or even a week. Math trails will be introduced in my future classroom.

Using Foldables in the Classroom

Graphic organizers are visual representations combining line, shape, space, and symbols to convey fats and concepts or to organize information. Graphic organizers help tp speed up communication, organized information, easy to understand, show complex relationships, clarify concepts with few words, convey ideas and understanding, and assess comprehension.

Using foldables in the classroom helps students engage in a different way of learning.  Foldables are eye appealing and a fast way of communicating the content students need to understand.  Foldables an help students take notes and outline the class discussions.  There are many ways to use folables in the classroom.  This is a great idea to keep students engaged.  Foldables can be used in all subjects for students to learn and understand concepts.

Five "Key Strategies" for Effective Formative Assessment

Formative Assessments are important.  It shows teachers where their students are in their learning.  it establishes where students are going and how to get there.  How are some ways to accomplish assessments?

1. Clarifying, sharing, and understanding goals for learning and criteria for success with learners.

By implementing a two stage process of first clarifying the learning goals, what is worthy and required understanding?, which is followed by establishing success criteria, what would count as evidence of understanding?  Then lead into activities to lead to and solidify the students understanding.  A backwards lesson plan design will help.  Start with what you want students to know and design lesson backwards from that goal.

2. Engineering effective classroom discussions, questions, activities, and tasks that elicit evidence of student's learning.

Craft questions that explicitly build in the under generalizations and over generalizations that students are known to make.  Then we have more information on where to go next.  This will help address confusion of students in the class discussion.  This is pre-assessment.

3. Providing feedback that moves learning forward.

Focus on the quality of work rather than the person to avoid ego-involving.  Tell students where to improve and how they go about doing it.  Write feedback so the students will find errors themselves and have a chance to correct.  I love the suggestions in the article.  In fifth grade at my school, the teachers will give a test or quiz.  If a student gets a question wrong, a pink paper is attached and the student has a chance to receive the points by reworking the problem on the pink sheet and turning it back into the teacher.  Students learn from their mistakes.

4. Activating students as owners of their own learning.

Students who are involved with monitoring and regulating their learning have increased learning.  Focus on personal growth of each student.  Students can assess their level of understanding by flashing red, yellow, or green cards or point to a number chart of 1-4.

5. Activating students as learning resources for one another.

Students work IN a group and are accountable for their individual contribution.  Having students work in a group allows for growth in learning and a resource for clarity or another point of view.

Mathematics and Scientific Inquiry

I agree that when we are planning our math lessons to look at the math cores from the grade before, our grade, and the grade after.  This will help us understand where the students are coming from with their base knowledge, what they need to know at the end of the year, and what they are going to learn in the net grade level.  I agree with playing games with mathematical elements.  Games engage students with the words, "We are going to play a game."  They see it as fun and they learn or practice what they need by playing it.  My mentor teacher had played games almost everyday in class so far.  They students enjoy it and they stay engaged.

The 5 E's

The 5 E's
Going through the 5 E's was interesting.  I had to step out of my comfort zone and engage a new way to learn.  I love this and I know my students will enjoy learning the 5 E way.  Students enjoy learning hands on and trying to figure something out on their own.  With the 5 E's model students needs to adapt to a new way of learning.   The 5 E model helps students with non-routine problem solving and thinking outside the box.  This will help them when they are in the work force as environment and ways of doing things are changing everyday.  Students need to have complex communication and social skills.  This will help the students in the future as they will need to read non verbal cues and understand verbally what their peers are discussing.  Having a class of students learning  the 5 E model will help them to self manage and take responsibility for their individual learning as well as their groups learning and understanding.
I loved trying to figure out how to make the finches turn in a square.  This is a introduction so I will be able to help my oldest son with his Genius Hour Project that his teacher has engaged him to complete.  He has decided to program a robot.  I can guide him and push him to think outside the box and help him learn how to program a robot.   This will also help me figure out how to implement it into my classroom. and work out most of the hiccups.  By getting my son's input and my input I think we can and will make this happen!

Blog #9

I have decided this is one of my callings in life.  I love watching children learn and have their light bulb go on when they understand a new concept.  I want to be the person to stand up for a "little" person, push them to be their best and to excel in life.  Teaching has been a dream of mine since I was younger.  I was too scared to achieve it.  I am now achieving my dream and NOTHING will stop me from achieving it.

Service Learning helped me decide that teaching is for me.  The "little" people touched my heart.  They are so willing and wanting to learn.  They absorbed all that was taught them and still wanted more.  The "little" people wanted and needed a schedule.  I still get little "hi" from the students I helped.

My next steps in achieving my dream in to pass Math 1050 with an A-, pass the Praxis exam with flying colors by March 2016 and pass Math 2010 and 2020 with an A.  I cannot wait for my journey to unfold and will cherish every moment.

I am strong and have been through hell and back this last year.  I have many blessings that have came out of what I have gone through and am looking forward to what else is will come in my journey.  I know I can do anything that I put my mind to doing.  I need to support my beautiful children and this is the perfect career to do so.  I know there are many more blessings to come and need to be patient and cherish all the many moments.
